The Parable of the Dishonest Steward

Dear Family in Christ, This Sunday, we are presented with one of the most confusing parables of the Gospels. The parables of Jesus often have a sort of ‘punchline’; a strangeness, or surprising element that sets them apart from mere conventional wisdom, and the Dishonest Steward is no different. One particular line captures my attention: “The children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of the light.” When I read this, I think of all the earthly things I have worked so hard for. I think especially of my athletic career, and all the sacrifices I was willing to make just to make a certain team, perform to a certain level, or win this or that championship. No matter what the cost, staying up late, waking up early, physical pain and injuries, missing family events, and more- I was willing to do what it took. For what? For a ‘crown that perishes’, for accolades and accomplishments that even I won’t remember one day. I think this is what Jesus means by saying that 'the children of this age are more shrewd...’. All the things we work so hard and sacrifice so much for, whether it be athletic achievements, wealth, or otherwise, are, of course, not bad things, but are nothing in comparison with the prize that should mean the most to us: the Kingdom of Heaven. I am willing to wake up early and train, but how often have I been unwilling to wake up early to pray? I carefully research and read various materials that will give me an edge over my competitors, and how carefully do I read the word of God? I show up to competitions prepared, on time, and with complete focus, but how often do I arrive at Mass late, unprepared, and distracted? This Sunday, Jesus invites us to make a change- not so much to care less about worldly things, but to care more about Him.
God love you, Father Daniel
