God is one

Sometimes you may hear: God is one. It doesn’t matter if you call him Allah, or Yahweh, or Father. It is the same. It is not true: this reasoning is fearfully superficial. It is like saying: the sky is one. It doesn’t matter if you look at it with closed eyes, or with naked eye, or with a telescope, it is still the same sky! We know it is not. What does Christianity have to say specifically about God? We believe that God revealed himself; he came down to meet with us. Something unthinkable happened: God took our human flesh; he entered our human history; he lit the light to dispel our darkness. In Christ, God has shown his own face, his intimacy, his heart. This is truly extraordinary news. What kind of God have we come to know then in Christ? God is love. And the Holy Trinity? It is a consequence of the mystery of the infinite love of God. God is Trinity, for he is Love, and love becomes community of Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. To say that God is Love or that God is Trinity is the same thing. At the same time, when we look at humans, who are the image of God, we discover a Trinitarian pattern: family with its triple dimension of father, mother, and children. We, Christians, are called to live in community with others. We cannot live as solitary egoists who live for themselves, using only others for their own interest. Everywhere and always, we are called to create communion and unity with others, for our God is Communion and Unity!
