Find your place, where you belong, grow and serve!

Today, Jesus tells a surprising story about a vineyard owner. The owner hires workers all through the day. Some work for twelve hours. Some work for only one hour. At the end of the day, the owner pays everyone the exact same daily wage. The workers who worked all day complain. They say it is not fair. But the owner answers, “Are you envious because I am generous?”

God’s Math is Not Our Math. Human math is about earning what we deserve. We like scorecards, contracts, and rewards. We think hard work should buy us a better deal. But God does not use human math. God uses the logic of a free gift. His love cannot be bought or earned. He gives his grace to the early worker and the late worker alike. Everything we have from God is a gift.

Today at our Ministry Fair, we look at all the ways to serve our parish. It is easy to look at parish work through human math. We might think: “I am too busy for this”. “Let someone else do it; they have more time.” “What do I get out of this?”

The Gospel changes our perspective. We do not volunteer in a ministry to earn points with God. We do not work in the vineyard to force God to pay us back. We serve because we already received a massive, free gift of love. Many of our parishioners have been sharing this gift of God’s love for many years, even decades! Some of you have joined our parish recently and yet you already serve in one ministry or another and that is great too!

Now we all need to live out this Gift! In our church hall after the Mass you will see so many groups and ministries represented. They all will have some information and a list, where you can sign up! They all help you to understand that you belong to God and His church; that you belong to this community. Groups like CWL, KofC, Familiam for young couples or our different youth groups (OLHR Youth Group, Legion of Mary for Youth or Beyond the Screen for high school kids) or Italian Catholic Association. They all help you to grow. Like Franciscan Group, Legion of Mary, Into the Breach, Adoration Group, Apostle’s of Mercy Group, Alpha, RCIA or Live Christ Share Christ. They all help you to serve. In Church Choir, Men’s Choir, Children’s Choir, in Pastoral Council or Finance Council, as Lector, Usher or Altar server, in Society of St Vincent the Paul or St Anthony and Assumption Feast Committees.

I pray that each one of you will find a list where to put your name! Pick up the brochure from the church: Find Your Place! There is a place for everyone. It contains all the groups in our parish with a short description of their scope. Remember: Everyone has a gift! Everyone has a purpose! Everyone belongs!

Saint Paul reminds us that freely we have received, and freely we must give. When you sign up for a ministry today, you are not punching a time clock. You are sharing the overflow of God’s great generosity. Whether you give one hour a month or a larger part of your week, your work is a joyful response to a God who is endlessly kind. Let us stop counting what we deserve. Instead, let us step up and share God’s gifts with a joyful heart.

Trovi un luogo dove appartieni, dove puoi crescere e servire

Oggi Gesù racconta una storia sorprendente su un proprietario di una vigna. Il proprietario impiega operai durante tutta la giornata. Alcuni lavorano dodici ore, altri solo un’ora. Alla fine della giornata, il proprietario paga a tutti la stessa paga giornaliera. Gli operai che hanno lavorato tutto il giorno si lamentano, dicendo che non è giusto. Ma il proprietario risponde: “Siete invidiosi perché io sono generoso?”.

La matematica di Dio non è la nostra. La matematica umana si basa sul guadagnarsi ciò che ci spetta. Ci piacciono i punteggi, i contratti e le ricompense. Pensiamo che il duro lavoro debba garantirci un trattamento migliore. Ma Dio non usa la matematica umana. Dio usa la logica di un dono gratuito. Il suo amore non si può comprare né guadagnare. Egli dona la sua grazia sia a chi lavora sin da buon mattino sia a chi comincia lavoro tardi. Tutto ciò che abbiamo da Dio è un dono.

Oggi, alla nostra Fiera dei Ministeri, esaminiamo tutti i modi in cui possiamo servire la nostra parrocchia. È facile guardare al lavoro parrocchiale attraverso la logica umana. Potremmo pensare: “Sono troppo impegnato per questo”. “Lascia che lo faccia qualcun altro; ha più tempo”. “Cosa ci guadagno io?’.

Il Vangelo cambia la nostra prospettiva. Non ci offriamo volontari in un ministero per guadagnarci punti con Dio. Non lavoriamo nella vigna per costringere Dio a ripagarci. Serviamo perché abbiamo già ricevuto un dono d’amore immenso e gratuito. Molti dei nostri parrocchiani condividono questo dono dell’amore di Dio da molti anni, persino da decenni! Alcuni di voi si sono uniti alla nostra parrocchia di recente, eppure già prestano servizio in uno o altro ministero, e anche questo è fantastico!

Ora tutti noi dobbiamo vivere questo Dono! Nella nostra sala parrocchiale, dopo la Messa, troverete rappresentati tanti gruppi e ministeri. Ognuno di essi avrà delle informazioni e un elenco dove potrete iscrivervi! Tutti vi aiutano a capire che appartenete a Dio e alla Sua Chiesa; che appartenete a questa comunità. Gruppi come CWL, KofC, Familiam per le giovani coppie o i nostri diversi gruppi giovanili (OLHR Youth Group, Legion of Mary for Youth o Beyond the Screen per i ragazzi delle scuole superiori) o l’Associazione Cattolica Italiana. Tutti vi aiutano a crescere. Come il Gruppo Francescano, la Legione di Maria, Into the Breach, il Gruppo d’Adorazione, il Gruppo degli Apostoli della Misericordia, Alpha, RCIA o Live Christ Share Christ (Vivi Cristo Condividi Cristo). Tutti vi aiutano a servire. Nel Coro della Chiesa, nel Coro Maschile, nel Coro dei Bambini, nel Consiglio Pastorale o nel Consiglio Economico, come Lettore, Usciere o Chierichetto, nella Società di San Vincenzo de' Paoli o nei Comitati per la Festa di Sant'Antonio e dell'Assunzione.

San Paolo ci ricorda che gratuitamente abbiamo ricevuto e gratuitamente dobbiamo dare. Quando vi iscrivete a un ministero oggi, non state timbrando il cartellino. State condividendo la sovrabbondanza della grande generosità di Dio. Che dedichiate un’ora al mese o una parte più consistente della vostra settimana, il vostro lavoro è una gioiosa risposta a un Dio infinitamente buono. Smettiamo di contare ciò che meritiamo. Piuttosto, facciamoci avanti e condividiamo i doni di Dio con un cuore gioioso.
