The Sacred Heart of Jesus

‘When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.’ (Matthew 9)

Dear Family in Christ,

As you may have heard, the Church traditionally calls us to honour the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in a particular way during the month of June. As this Sunday falls more or less in the heart of the month, it is fitting that the Gospel tells us about the response of Jesus’ heart when He sees His people suffering: He had compassion.

So often, when my life gets hectic, or I say yes to too many things, or through my own fault I get behind and don’t get done what needs to get done, I am tempted to think that God is simply disappointed in me. That is not, however, the testimony of the Gospels.

Just this past Friday, on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, He cried out to all who would listen, “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle, and humble of heart. And you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Perhaps you are feeling this burden right now. It may be sin, it may be hurt, it may just be life in this hectic, fallen, lonely world that longs for Heaven. The Sacred Heart of Jesus reminds us that the all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing God of the Universe sees you, has compassion on you, and really does love you. He even likes you- in fact, He is especially fond of you, and He cries to you, “Come to me.”

O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine.

God love you,

Father Daniel
